With summer here, many will be loading coolers and heading out into the heat. I don’t know about you, but I find loading ice into my cooler a pain and a mess. We have to rush out and buy it at the last minute (so we are spending money on something that will melt). As it melts, it soaks everything in the cooler. Wait, I have an idea…. Problems solved!
We have milk jugs in our freezer but they do not have milk in them. We have consumed the milk and now they have water that freezes into ice. We have 2 sizes, gallon and 1/2 gallon. Do not fill them completely full as they will expand in freezing. We also do not put the lids on them for freezing.
When we are ready to fill our coolers, no problem. We do not need to rush out or stop somewhere to buy ice. We just head to our freezer and throw some of these “ice jugs” into our coolers. (We stand them upright in the cooler.) They take longer to thaw so they last longer.
Another great part? As they melt, they do not dump water all over the contents in our cooler. There is no soaking of anything. A little water will settle in the bottom, but nothing gets flooded as they would with ice.
When we arrive home, we throw the now thawed jugs of water back into the freezer for our next trip. When we need ice for a cooler again, it is not a problem. We have our “ice jugs”. My husband actually came up with this idea, but hey, it Works For Me!

Great idea. This also costs less than buying bags of ice. We do this same thing, only we use smaller bottles, usually old Gatorade bottles. That way, when the ice melts we can drink the water.
Going to dig out the containers from the recycling bin now and stick them in the freezer! :)
Great idea
Money-saving,too
And believe me
We buy lots of ice
Next time we head out
We'll follow your tip
No floating ketchup
Will certainly be nice!
I second what tgabc says...we just use empty pop, gatorade, or water bottles, that way when they start to thaw have nice cold water to drink! Yea!

Oops! Didn't realize you posted the same thing until after I signed Mr. Linky.
It is a great tip though.
Good Idea!
Such a simple idea, I can't believe it never occurred to me. I hate the way everything gets wet when the ice starts melting and sloshing around. This is a great idea!
I never thought of this! Great idea@!
Now that is a great idea!! I may have to steal that one! I'm always up for something that saves a little money!!
FUnny- we drive to Sonic an hour away when we are heading there anyway to buy their yummy, yummy ice in bags for the home freezer. This is a great idea to help keep that was melting on the way home! The cooler just wasn't enough :)
Great idea!
I'll fill some bottles tonight.
We do the same thing. Isn't there some sort of expression about "great minds thinking alike"? :-)
I'm loving this idea. Thanks!
Blessings,
~Toni~
